Hi! I know that when I started working out, I was the same way. I starting taking up kick boxing and I need to eat before I go to the gym, but I found out that 1 banana, or 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with honey, maybe even a super small bowl of raisin bran can make a difference, and the sugar wouldn't affect your stamina. My body changed slowly over time, but I could still lose at least another 15-20 lbs if I added in the tread mill or ate a little better.
I would for sure try to eat something before you work out, but then later in the day and evening, eat much less with veggies and protein to keep the calories down.
