No you don't need to have DOMS the following day to have had a good workout. It is normal to have DOMS for the few times you do a particular set of exercises but your body adapts fairly quickly and will no longer get as sore and sometimes no soreness depending on how experience and regularly your lifting. Depending on your goals and rep ranges you should only be able to complete your chosen number of reps in a set.

EG. Most people would agree that I push hard and have a very intense training routine (National Benchpress Champion) yet I only usually suffer badly from DOMS when I change the way I target each muscle and only for a couple of weeks worth of training.
