Lightbulb Training for 5k- thoughts

My best friend and I have decided to train for a 5k, I'm pretty excited about it and terribly scared at the same time. It has been a LONG time since I have run over a mile without stopping much less 3 miles. If any of you have some advice for training please let me know. I'll keep an update on how it's going! Wish me luck!!

I am doing a 5K in March! I am so pumped! I did one last year but I didn't really put my full effort into it. This year will be differant!
What I am doing is kinda a combination to strenghten my legs. I have found my legs give out running a mile long before my mind, or lungs do. Weird, but they do. I think it is in part due to the amount of weight I am still carrying. But I complete 3 miles at least 5 times a week, but I switch off between the indoor track and the ellpitical trainer. When I do the track I alternate between jogging a few laps and walking a few. The longer I do it the less laps I walk, the more I jog. I also do a leg work out with a fair amount of weight to build my muscles. I am still able to do 3 sets of 12-15 reps but I do it with a heavy enough weight that I have to put some real effort into pushing it. One of my 5 days I do the actual course, just to see if my time is improving and if the amount I jog increases.
I mentioned 3 miles 5x a week, but let me add that I did not start doing 3 miles. I started with a mile then added a lap at a time. Start with a distance that is comfortable with your fitness level and increase it from there.
When is your 5K?
