nutritious snacks...

what does everyone do for nutritious snacks? I think snacking is one of the hardest things for most people and that's where they can really go wrong when attempting to diet and stay on a strict plan. There are the nutritious snacks however that can help people eat well along with managing their weight. That is what the South Beach living food snacks do. Their Fiber Fit granola bars is just one example of a great snack to have while staying health conscious, dont ya think?

snacking is very complicated issue. some people actually just increase number of meals perday so that you get a well rounded serving of everything more often (4-6 times) and that cuts down on one sided snacking.

I personally like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into squares or veggies with cottage cheese or even organic cheese crackers with cottage cheese.

I don't like processed or packaged food so, that limits the suggestions I have.

If I do have a bar of any sort it's the Nectar variety by Clifbar (I believe).

A handful of nuts, or a piece of fruit is always good when on the move, but I'm also inclined to agree with Stikfigure with an extra sandwich between meals too. Hard boiled eggs are also good for when you're on the go, shove one in a pocket, it's ready wrapped and nutritous.

I had a bad habit of snacking at my desk. Between calls I would grab a mini snickers etc. Now I take the time in the mornings to cut up an apple and some carrots and keep those at my desk. I also have some fat free graham crackers, wheat crackers, and bran flakes. The bran flakes may not sound good to everyone but they give me the crunch of a chip. When I am home in the evenings if I want a snack I will sip a cup of chamomille tea. By the time I'm done getting it ready, letting it cool off enough to drink, and drink I am past the urge to snack. I try to keep my snacks as close to whole foods as possible, just feel better about snacking if I know whats in it. If I am totally craving chocolate that "one day a month" I keep the Hostess 100 calorie cupcake pack. 3 mini cupcakes, 100 calories. I have found the more simple I keep it the less likely I am to go off the deep end.

I used to snack a lot, but now I keep to the 4-5 small meals per day. Anything that comes prepackaged just makes me shudder. Ick.

Snacks

I discovered Laughing Cow cheese when I was on the South Beach diet. Randomly, I have not started whipping the cheese (the herb one) and using it like "ranch" dip with veggies. It is great. I have even taken it to parties as an official dip and people love it.
On the sweat side, I mix sugar free chocolate pudding with fat free whipped cream and make a bowl of pudding. It tastes great. It solves my chocolate craving and it's low cal, low carb and low fat.

I do sugar free jello with fat free whipped cream. And if I am really craving that sweet item I found Skinny Cow ice cream bars or philly has a cheescake premade in the dairy aisle and they have a low fat version. I will take a little of that and put it on a fat free graham cracker. Haven't done desserts in a little while but if I get that 1 week a month craving then it is my go to.

I love Laughing Cow Light, it is a fantastic replacement for mayonnaise; I put Laughing Cow on a slice of bread, then spead tuna fish on that, then top with slices of cucumber, a sprinkle of salt, and top with another slice of bread... The nice thing is, it's not that calorific, but packs a punch flavour-wise.

It's amazing what seemingly unnoticed foods can be used as replacements for other higher fat foods...it also helps me because I can't tolerate that much milk, so I get to enjoy a creamy tuna sandwich....they really are delicious. And I intend to try some of these other variants that people are posting here, maybe even add them to my cookbook.

The following is a generalised list of snacks, but resembles lists found in most exercise books, to some extent (it saved me having to type it all out too, just copy/paste):

Banana and peanut butter
Peanut butter and bagel
Bagel and cheese slice
Cheese stick and crackers
Graham crackers and milk
Milk and cereal
Cereal, nuts, dried fruit ( snack mix recipe )
Smoothie (fruit and milk or juice, yogurt)
Yogurt and nuts
Nuts and fruit-filled muffin
Baked potato with melted cheese
Oatmeal with fruit and nuts
Pretzel rod wrapped with deli turkey slice or cheese

Examples of processed snacks that are low fat and low fiber include:
Frozen fruit bars
White Bagel with Honey
Frozen yogurt
Low fat yogurt
Sports gels and blocks
Pretzels
Fruit snacks or roll-ups
Energy bars, Nutrition Bars, and Sports Nutrition Drinks

This section is designed more for post-workout, which is why they seem slightly higher in salt and so forth, but are still considered healthy snacks for post-workout:
Popcorn sprinkled with Parmesan Cheese
Pretzels with Peanut Butter
Cheese or Peanut Butter Crackers
Baked Potato with Melted Cheese
Soup and Crackers
Cottage Cheese with Fruit
Pizza
Macaroni and Cheese
V-8 and Tomato Juice
Pickles
Nuts and seeds with cereal and dried fruit ( snack mix recipe )
Sports nutrition drinks

From: Sports Nutrition Snacks

A healthy snack is pretty much anything that can be transported about; I like things like cucumber and peanut butter sandwiches, which I know sounds odd, but they really do taste good.
