Intensity of Workouts

I was on the eliptical today and it has a graph showing what your heart rate should be for low/moderate/high intensity. High for me, according to that, is 156. I've heard it's not to be considered high unless you have trouble talking/singing and start sweating. So I pushed harder. I started feeling it more and sweating only when I got my heart rate up to 173. Which is correct? Is pushing myself that high safe? Thanks!

The amount of sweat has little to do with how hard your working. Not everybody will sweat during exercise.

the talk test is a simple guide, if you are unable to comfortably talk or whistle while exercising it is more likely that you are working anaerobically and at a higher level than needed for effective aerobic training. the more aerobically fit you are the more you can push it. max HR depends on the individual, and their fitness level, the chart on the machines is only a guide.

when working at an anaerobic level lactate concentrations increase and energy can no longer be provided fast enough via aerobic metabolism.
