You can lose weight and keep in shape by walking, I have a book on walking called "Walk Slim" by Snowdon and Humphreys, see if you can access a copy at a library somewhere. It discusses progressing from gentle walks to power walks etc.
But yes increasing or doing 2 miles twice a day, either will work, but you could also just up the intensity and not worry about how many miles you do, do a set time such as an hour and just go all out. I used to do a walk around the outskirts of the town, before my ankle injury, and it took about 45 minutes to cover around 4 miles which was very hilly...but it is a good workout. And try to incorporate sit ups, push ups, half push ups, lifting buckets (you can put stuff in to gradually increase the weight, books, water, sand, pebbles etc)...there is loads you can do without spending a penny, let your imagination run with it, find an exercise and work out if it can be adapted in some way.
