Question Gaining weight but not fat?

I'm so confused! I'm underweight and skinny, and I want to tone up and build some muscle. (I'm 5'7 & 112 pounds // 175cms & 51kg)

The thing is, I'm scared of getting fat! (I was quite overweight some time ago) Does anyone know what's best for safely gaining weight? Should cardio and strength trainng be combined? And I hear that you have to eat more calories to build muscle, but how do you know that those calories will be added as muscle and not fat?

I think you should eat more high protein. For the exercise, weight lifting is the fastest way to gain muscle. And your muscle will do the calories burning. So, don't be affraid of getting overweight as long as you keep exercising.

Hi Joliex,

As you incorporate strength training into your routines, you will see an increase in body mass (not fat). Muscle weighs more than fat, but requires "less space" which is why people often use the term "toned." Cardio workouts burn the carbohydrates/glucose at a higher rate than strength training. Combined the two provide for a well-balanced exercise program. By adding cardio, strength and keeping a healthy diet, you're going to increase your energy levels, bone density (studies show that strength training is a way to help prevent Ostroperosis), and muscle mass. As long as you're eating healthy options (vegetables, lean proteins, fruits and high fiber grains), you're going to be fine and will not be gaining fat.
Happy New Year!!!

Nice post, rep+

That's what I was going to say. Train with weights 3 times a week for about 45 mins a session, increase the amount of protein you're eating, and see how that goes.

If you need a workout let me know and I'll post one up.

My other recommendation is to get your body fat measured. Then you have a baseline to work from. That way you know if you are putting on muscle or fat. Most health clubs can do it for you...or your doctor can do it too.

Good luck!
