Joining in on the fun

Hi all!

About 5 months ago I realized that I was working way too much and had the pounds to show for it. Being in my 30s, I figured that I better do something about the rut I was in before I killed myself off early. So my neighbor friend and I started bike riding and at first it kicked my butt, but after 3 months of riding 3 or 4 times/week, it got a lot easier. At the end of August we made it through a 25-mile bike ride fundraiser here in Oregon and we were just happy to make it to the finish line without passing out or hurting really bad...hehe.

I've gotten to a point now, where I really enjoy exercise. I go to the gym about 3 or 4 times/week since the weather turned sour and do mostly cardio, but want to get some advice on weight lifting and add lifting into my routine so I can tone my muscles - especially my upper body. I'm just not sure how to go about it without hurting myself. I joined this forum hoping to get some tips, maybe get creative ideas on exercising in the yucky winter time, and, of course, make some new friends.

Hi, Welcome to the forum !
It's a good decision to add weight lifting in your exercise. Do stretching before weight lifting to avoid injury and soreness. And keep your spirit !

Hey bombinchic! I can't help too much with the weight lifting, but I agree, the winter is yucky -- you don't want to do a whole lot outside.

Have any kids? Even if you don't, have you considered buying a Nintendo Wii? We have a thread about it in the other forum, you might want to check it out.

It's always easier exercising together. The more, the merrier. If you're looking for creative ways to exercise, charlotte is right about the Wii. We're having a conversation about it right now.

No kids yet...but have a dog. I walk him every other day, but there again, it gets a little chilly doing that. My younger brother just bought a Wii and he has bowling, baseball, and a couple of other games he raves about. I'll have to see if I can take a trip to see him and check it out. I'll also check out the forum you mentioned. Thanks!

Yeah, you definitely should check it out. I have my elderly parents playing it, people who don't know how a video game or a computer works, and they love it.
