Wink Healthy brekkie

I really wanted to get oats into my diet but couldn't work out a way to eat them that I could stomach. I have never liked breakfast foods (cereals, sloppy foods yuk), so I tried toast etc, but whilst I've been feeling ill that has become a nightmare to get down on occasion, so I came up with the following, which seems nicely balanced and tastes great.

50g oats
125g yoghurt (proper yoghurt) strawberry works well
200ml of ice cold water
1 banana
1 heaped tablespoon of ground almonds

Place all ingredients in a blender, blend for a couple of minutes at most, pour into a really tall glass, and enjoy

No idea what the nutritional values are, sorry, but it does have carb, fats and protein in there. Tried it with cherry yoghurt today, and it seems good, but I prefer the strawberry yoghurt and banana flavour. I can now eat a good breakfast even when not feeling all that well.

no not really my idea of fun that...

I tried oatmeal bread once and toasted it, except it was still 'damp' or stodgy/heavy would be a better way to describe it; it was homemade, so healthy enough, but it seems oat bread retains a lot of moisture even when toasted. But, after much perseverance I found a way to eat oats as a healthy meal minus the sugar you'd get in the cookies.

well, that's no fun at all. the whole point of the cookies is the sugar!

5kg your beakfast sounds a lot like what I have in my breakfast protein shake. I only use half a bannanna though and chocolateflavoured whey powder instead of yogurt.
Adding oatmeal to drinks works suprisingly well, I think.... but you just have to rinse out the glass straight after of it sets like cement

Hey 5kglifter - Great idea about getting some oats for breakfast. I love porridge and pretty much have it all year round but I appreciate we all have different 'favourites' (personally I can't stomach tuna). I've made this kind of shake too for my better half who needs to stay off wheat.

Anyway, just a few variations you might consider, so you don't get bored!!

- soak your oats overnight in the fridge. They plump up and soften well which might help you digest them better. Try just water or juice (apple/orange) for a variation on flavour/texture.
- frozen berries work well too and are a great antioxidant (although my fave is banana).
- in Australia we get packs of "LSA" which is ground up Soy, Linseed and Almond so I use this in shakes/smoothies and it's full of 'good oil'.

Enjoy!

I know some guys who make a protein shake out of pepsi max and tinned tuna blitzed up together, so you wouldn't like that Puffin

I have to agree, with Puffin - frozen berries AND BANANA (mmmm...yum) add a lot to the texture (and obviously, flavor). But freezing the fruit (pre-cut the bananas and put them in plastic freezer bags or whatever) adds so much to the thickness of a good smoothie/shake.
