Your doctors recommendation seems pretty vague, could you elaborate?
Either way if lunges are causing you pain there are creative alternatives such as
step-ups and split squats.
I am more interested in what is causing the knee pain. It may be a muscular imbalance between the muscles of your thighs which is cauisng the patella to track improperly. If that is the case you may look into some soft tissue treatment before you do any of the aforementioned exercises.
