Default Run w/ weights?

What are the benefits of running with weights? I see women running with those small colored barbells, a few pounds in weight -- do those really help you somehow?

They probably use them to tone their arms while working the lower body when running. I know that's why I would use them!

I run using weights, it gives me something to do honestly. It's something to focus on other than the pavement.

I don't run with weights, I'm still too weak to do that. I'd probably get tired and drop them off on the side of the road I'm running on, hehehe

You could also try wearing ankle weights. They'll help tone your legs and calves. They'll make running harder but then when you take them off you'll be able to run a LOT faster.

They increase your CardioVascular output, and everything the others that replied to your message said. You should try running with them and without them, and increase the weights over time. Also try incorporating some hill and sprint training as these will increase your stength as well.

I have never done it, but I have just bought Jillian Michael's DVD set. In it, she does weights combined with cardio, like shoulder presses with jumping jacks. She says that just lifting weights doesn't get your heart rate up enough to burn fat, so these ladies running with weights are increasing their calorie burn while also toning their arms. I'll have to try it with my 2 pounders.

How do u like Jillian Michael's DVD?! I want to get it but haven't gotten around to it yet! I think she is awesome and would like to see what you think about her workout? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
