21 Years old, wanting to lose 30-35lbs :)

Okay, so right now I weigh 185LBS, and I'm around 5'7. I'm also 21 years old. It's just hard for me to get to the gym, because I don't know what to do. (can't afford a trainer) I was hoping you'd be able to help, because I have heard such mixed things.

I want to get to about 160LBS (30-35 lbs) about how long will that take?

At least, how long until I/Others will start to see weight loss???

I've read I have to do weight training and cardio in order to lose weight, otherwise I will get very flabby skin? Please help me out with this.
Right now, I'm eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack inbetween of some fruit. I wouldn't say that my eating is the healthiest thing, but I stopped putting on very greasy food and lower my portions. This way I'm eating at least what I like. (which does NOT include Fast food or anything along those lines. I'm just a pasta kind of person!)

I was hoping you'd also be able to give me some advice as to what machines to use, and how long. I'm very, self conscious about going on the treadmill at this point. I know there are people that wish they only had 30lbs to lose, and I shouldn't complain, but when I run I feel my gut move and it's not something that I'm proud of. I tried to go on it, and got so discouraged, I haven't gone back to the gym in months.

I am grateful to all the help and extra suggestions you guys will give!

Atleast i have being doing some cardio at home. I do all of those for about 5 min.
- baby push ups
- bike crunch
- slide lunges and arms extensions
- side slide lunge and biceps curl

I dont go to gym, since i start to feel embarrassed, so i rather do those at home and some more different exercises. And few times in a week i go jogging. try these out for awhile!

It sounds like weight training would be a good place to start for you.
When it come to your gut moving when you're on the treadmill, nobody else will be noticing that honestly believe me! But the great thing about weight training is if you push yourself you can see results almost from the first session.

If you want to start weight training you should try to do something that works all the muscles in you body.

You can do this either at home with a pair of cheap adjustable Dumbells:
Look for a Dumbell only workout online, there are some really good ones out there.

Or you just need to do a variety of machines at the gym, try to do a machine that works your legs, your back, front and arms each time you go.
Thats a good place to start.

Looking at your diet, try to keep the pasta/bread to very small portions and eat lots of lean protein (chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, fish) . Thats always a good place to start, if your not noticing some change after a month, then look at your diet more closely.

Thanks for the responses.
So every time I go to do weight training, I should do my arms, back and legs each time?

I thought I had to seperate it.
(FOR EXAMPLE)
I started going to the gym and I did

Sun-NOTHING
Mon-Front Arms, Back of arms, Assisted situps (cardio also)
Tues-Strickly Cardio
Wed-Legs, Assisted situps (did the bike for only 20 minutes to add small cardio)
Thurs-Tues-Strickly Cardio
Fri-Front Arms, Back of arms, Assisted situps (cardio also)
Sat-NOTHING

and that's how I swap off.

I would ad in cardio with every workout. start with 2-5 min of cardio followed by wights, and continue alternating, It will be sure to keep your heart rate up so that you will burn more cal/ lose more wieght.
