soreness rumors

Okay so I have heard it both ways, when you are working out and you are sore, you should work through the soreness. I have also heard that you should give your self at least one recovery day if you are sore. Does anyone know which is better and why?

It can depend on how sore you are as well. I f you're that sore that it hurts just to think about moving then rest the particular muscles for as much as a week if needed. If it's just an ache, as in barely nothing, just work through it.

As you get used to working out, you can tell which range of the scale your muscles ache at and decide on a daily basis...beginners tend not to really understand that if they've overdone it and it hurts, that they should rest...but they can equally go to the other extreme and rest whenever they just ache.

I like weight training etc, so my question is always "Is it wise to workout my legs today, I can barely walk?" that kind of questioning helps get the right answer. The same applies if it's not an ache/soreness but a twinge, then it's wiser to err on the side of resting and stretching gently.

^ what she said!
Sometimes I get knots in my muscles and that kinda pain I tend to just work through because then it actually goes away quicker than if I just rest up. It doesn't hurt when you're working out funnily enough - just in the mornings and sometimes when walking/other strange movements. If I go for a long kayak after not having done it in ages I'll be hurting - but its a good hurt! If I go for a run I'll be hurting too but I tend to take it a little more easy if its my legs in pain for some reason - I haven't consciously made that decision, its just what happens!

it realy depends on whether it is an ache or pain, if it is pain it is a potential injury and you should rest and RICE and posible see a doctor but with an ache from unfamiliar exercise or intensity a light follow up exercise a couple of days afterwards can help speed up recovery. Most of the time i have no problems with DOMS but after a change in routine or after a planned break i will feel it badly (like today lol)
