Whatever the goal, it must be measureable. If you say, " I want to loose weight", it would be impossible to know when that is achieved. A more appropriate goal would be "I want to loose 8 pounds in 4 weeks." Also, set short AND long term goals. If your long term goal is to loose 25 pounds, have a short term goal of 5 pounds. This way, when you achieve your short term goal, it will motivate you to go all the way....there is nothing more motivating than success.
