How to Make Your Gym Time More Exciting and Enjoyable

Hate the gym? Here are some ways to make it more exciting and enjoyable

I often wonder whether women give up their weight loss and fitness goals because they are sick of going to the gym all the time. Workouts can be pretty boring and if you do the same thing every time you are bound to get a little sick and tired of it all.

But the gym can be exciting and enjoyable.

With a few little tips and tricks you can make your time at the gym much more pleasant. When you enjoy fitness you are much more likely to stick at it and you are much more likely to get better results. So, if you are bored of the gym give this post a read.

Workout with a friend

I know you will probably read this first heading and gloss over it because you have heard it before but I really hope you pay attention.

Going to the gym with a friend is one of the absolute best ways to stay in shape and enjoy the workout.

Whatever you do to stay fit if you do it with a friend you are much more likely to have success. I play indoor soccer with a group of five mates and it is my favorite time of the week. We hang around after and chat and have a great time. And, I never miss it because I know I will let the team down. I also push myself harder because I know they are watching! This is one of the main reasons training with a friend is a great idea - you rely on each other and because of that your workouts are more effective.

If you don’t have any mates that want to go to the gym with you, join a class that they will enjoy. Martial arts, boxing, yoga, tai chi, indoor soccer, netball… whatever. There are so many organised leagues around the place you are bound to find something you both enjoy doing. And, when you try to give up watch how they react! I don’t think so!

Set short term fitness goals

This little trick was taught to me by my soccer coach in high school. He said, if we wanted to be part of the starting line up on the team we each had to run at least 40 kilometers per week on top of the regular training. We had to keep a log book of our extra training and make sure we never came to practice too tired to train hard.

It was an amazing system.

I used to start Monday morning at 5.30am and I used to love it! Having a goal to meet each week made me driven and much more motivated and I would always approach it with gusto. I never felt like it was weighing me down because I knew if I did it like the coach wanted I would become a great soccer player. And, after a few months of this system I found I was doing 10 or more extra kilometers on top of the required amount because I was so fit. We killed every team in the league that year because we were simply too fit for them.

Try and set yourself a short term goal each week or fortnight. It could be a distance you want to run or a number of calories you want to burn. You could find out how long the Great Wall of China is and run that distance. Being creative with your workouts helps you to keep them interesting and avoid the boredom.

Different machine each day

When I got a new puppy the vet told me to take away certain toys for a few weeks at a time so when I brought it back out the dog was happy to see it and still interested in it. This principle applies to the gym perfectly.

If you go the the gym each day and each day use the same machines you are bound to get sick of them. Cast your mind back to when you first went to the gym. It was so exciting and everything you did was enjoyable. Well, we can sort of re-create this feeling by making sure we don’t abuse and overuse our favorite pieces of equipment.

For example, I love the rowing machine but if I do it everyday the very sight of it makes me feel like throwing up. So, I do it only on Monday and Saturday and since I made that change I noticed that I am much more enthusiastic about getting on the machine and working it hard. Like I am trying to make use of a fleeting opportunity.

Remember the benefits

One thing I think people forget all too often is the fact that going to the gym and working out is extremely beneficial for almost every aspect of your health. You are less likely to get cancer, less likely to have a heart attack, less likely to get arthritis and so on.

People stop thinking of the gym as a gift and start seeing it as a burden, a chore. It becomes something you SHOULD do instead of something that you WANT to do. This is when the problem starts.

If you find yourself bored of the gym and wishing you were doing something else then remind yourself that not everybody has the time or money to do what you are doing. You have an amazing opportunity to better your body and mind and extend your life. You can look and feel good. If you focus more on the positives you will find that your outlook is more positive and everything you do will be shaped by that optimism.

Conclusion
The gym is a very healthy place. It is where people go to improve their bodies and get over some mental and physical injuries. It should be a place of energy and fun. It should never feel like a burden. Try and be creative with your workout and shift your perspective if you are being too negative. You will find it can make a lot of difference.

Xeno said:I own an indoor rowing studio in Costa Mesa, CA. Our machines sit on slides and it is more fun to row with the rowing machines moving back and forth underneath you. I produced seven indoor rowing workout DVDs which make rowing 10K at a time a breeze.
Log your miles and try to do some of the challenge distances such as the 500, 2K and half marathon. All the best, Xeno Muller, Olympic gold and silver medalist. www.ironoarsman.com
