How to SKIP your way to SEXY arms - I promise!

Skipping or rope jumping has long been a favorite exercise of those who have toned, strong and very sexy arms. Boxers, martial artists, fitness experts all talk about the benefits of skipping. So, here is how to skip your way to thin, toned and sexy arms!

Why is skipping so good?

Many of you probably think that skipping is a little school children’s exercise that is not very challenging and not very productive. However, you couldn’t be further from the truth.

There are a few reasons skipping is one of the best cardio exercises out there but the main one is that it works all of the muscles in your body in one very effective exercise.

Think about it. You can stand in one spot with one piece of equipment and get a really tough cardio workout then pushes and burns your legs, calves, shoulders, forearms and your lungs. Why not!

Bruce Lee on skipping

Bruce Lee was a very big advocate of skipping and used to say that:

Ten minutes of skipping is equal to about 30 minutes of jogging.

I dont know about you but this sounds like it is worth trying to me. Imagine being able to stay in one place and get a full cardio workout it less time than usual! As to whether Bruce Lee’s claim is factual, I don’t know. But I do agree with the sentiment of his statement in that skipping is more intense and more effective than jogging for burning fat.

What you need to get sexy arms

To get a set of sexy arms you need two element:

  1. You need to lose fat; and
  2. Gain arms muscles.

The thing about skipping is that it seems to do both. It will not build you huge and bulging muscles like weight training, but it will strengthen them and thus improve the shape and size of your muscles. And, it without a doubt burns fat very well.

Don’t skip like a school kid!

One of the things you need to know that will either make or break your skipping progress is how to do it. Seems obvious right?

Well, many times I see people at the gym skipping like a little school kid, one leg after the other, slowly passing the rope over their head and then jumping over it as if they were doing hurdles! It looks stupid! And, it won’t work.

If you want to know how to skip correctly you need to look at how a boxer does it. They pass the rope over their head so fast you can’t see it. They use the balls of their feet as the force of the spring. They stay in a tiny area as if they were skipping on a small coin.

If you have ever seen a boxer skip it is quite an amazing skill. You need to try to emulate them by pushing one foot forward after the other, so that both feet take equal turns in jumping the rope. Remember, you only JUST need to clear the rope as it passes under your foot. It is called skipping not hurdling!

The skipping workout

You need to skip for about 15 minutes to get a good workout. You can throw in some double jumps and other variatons to keep it entertaining. However, other than the length there is nothing really more to say about the workout. Just skip and watch the results come in!

All skipping ropes are not created equal!
You need to get a rope that won’t frustrate the heck out of you. It needs to be heavy and usually it needs to be made of leather. If it isn’t you run the risk of getting a rope that tangles and loses shape and smacks into the back of your legs and neck all the time. Does anyone use skipping regularly now?

Nessajane said:One other piece of equipment that is very important for skipping is a good quality exercise bra. Otherwise things could get a wee bit untidy.
Stacy said:I put skipping in part of my workout twice a week. All I can handle is about 1.5 minutes at a time. I catch my breath and do it for a total of 3 sets. I would love to be able to get up to 15 minutes. Should I be skipping 4-5 days a week? I also run twice a week for 3 to 4 miles at 8.5 to 9 minute miles. You would think I could jump longer.
Monkey Woman said:I have to wonder if the whole "skip to my loo" would work as well? Maybe with some small weights (around 5lbs) in hand?

I totally suck at jumping rope. Almost no hand-eye coordination here. Bleh.
