No excuses women's fitness

Here is a new article from one of my new writers, Peta. She will be posting from time to time so make her welcome with her first article - No excuses women’s fitness!

How to stop sabotaging your best laid fitness plans

This is for real women out there that, like me, are extremely busy and find it hard to stick to a fitness regime because various obstacles get in the way. Now if you are a flawless superwoman, someone who resists temptation and is never lazy, then skip this one.

For the rest of the mere mortals, here are a few pointers on how to negotiate with your worst enemy…yourself.

#1 Really, really, really want it.

Ok this may sound silly, but if you don’t have a strong personal motivation to achieve your goal then you’ll struggle. its easy to be lazy or give in to cravings when you don’t have a strong idea of what you want to achieve.

#2 Manage your cravings

Ok now i have to admit it…I'm a chocoholic. Scratch that, I'm addicted to sweets, and this is one of the easiest ways to sabotage your weight loss regime. if you want to shed fat then you can’t give in to your cravings, whether they be chocolate, soft drink, chips, burger or bread (yep that’s a big one for me too).

I found that it's futile to purely try and ignore cravings, because it simply sends me to breaking point and I binge. So I substitute. I find a healthy food that is similar in taste and eat that when I get a craving. say I'm craving bread, i find a savory that i can eat instead, something I like just as much too, say like some kind of meat. I eat fruit instead of lollies and there are some great artificially sweetened chocolate desserts out there now days (especially the ice cream that’s yummy).

Now I'm not going to encourage the consumption of artificial sweetener on a regular basis but it will help you lose weight in the short term. I find that once you’ve stopped eating the food you crave for a while, the cravings disappear because it is generally the sugar, carbohydrate or salt that you are craving in the first place.

#3 Plan your meals

Before you go shopping each week, make a plan of the foods you are going to eat for every meal, including snacks. Make sure that you include the right amounts of each food group per day to get all the nutrients you need. Take into account the amount of preparation time you are going have for each meal and be realistic.

If you don’t have time to cook one night that’s ok, but have something in the fridge, freezer or cupboard that you can throw together quickly. Not only will you stick to your healthy eating plan but you’ll save money and waste less food.

#4 Enjoy exercise

Now I am far from a gym junkie. I have been a dancer all of my life so I'd much rather be grooving on a dance floor than sweating it out on a treadmill. So, that’s what I do. I know that if I don’t enjoy my work out, I'll make excuses not to do it.

So find something you love doing and sign up for classes. It doesn’t have to be conventional. You could play team sport, go bush walking, aerobics, whatever, if you’re mind is preoccupied with improving at a skill then you will find you’re work out flies by and you’ll be more likely to go back.

If you are not sure what you’re interested in then try things out, most places have free or cheap trials, so just give it a go.

Another great motivating factor that Rt has mentioned is working out with a friend. This definitely works for me. I've started pole dancing classes with a friend of mine. I thought I'd be there for a couple of weeks max, and I've been at it now for almost 3 months. Pretty good for someone who has always loathed upper body workouts!

So now girls, no excuses, got it. You've got to be fit and healthy to achieve what you want out of your life. So get to know your weaknesses and combat them straight away.
