This blog is about women’s fitness so I wanted to look at ten ways of getting fit that you might not have thought about trying. Variety is often the spice of exercise and can keep you going when you feel like you couldn’t be bothered. If this is you then try something new and it may re-kindle your love of fitness.
Girlfriend’s of mine often go for all day hikes. They take a big bag full of drinks and food and hike all the way up into the hills and come back down in time for sunset. This is an excellent endurance practice and can add a different dimension to your fitness routine.
Hiking is excellent work for the leg muscles. People who spend a lot of time hiking or climbing often have very toned legs and calf muscles and are often just as fit (aerobically) as people who go running regular basis.
This is a strange one. The other day my friend and I were out on business in the middle of no where and we saw a new gym that was having free trial days. So, we went in a tried it out before lunch and it was fantastic. I hadn’t noticed how bored I had gotten with the same old gym, same old equipment, day in, day out. The change of scenery we quite nice.
If you are the kind of person who trains in the same place each time, whether it is sport, martial arts or whatever, a change of venue can be an excellent refresher.
Most people have dogs and most people walk them every day but have you ever run with him? Dogs are some of the most amazing runners in the animal kingdom - they were built for it. Head over to a fenced in park somewhere near your home and chase a ball around with the dog. Try to out run him, chase him, duck and weave with him - you will be sorry.
Running with the dog reminds me a lot of the training we used to do at soccer. Very stop and start, fast and then slow, explosive and then relaxed. It really pushes your will power and your lung capacity. What’s more, your dog will love you for it and you will find he is better behaved at home.
I played my first ever game of indoor soccer last week and I think I actually nearly had a heart attack! I am young, fit and very healthy and I used to play near professional outdoor soccer but none of that prepared me for indoor. The game is very different and very high intensity. It is great for fitness. There are heaps of women playing and all of them are equal to the men as the game is played in a netted in area that really evens the playing field. Even the most skilled of players don’t get much of a run with the ball because there is not enough room. It really is a ‘chase and kick’ sport.
Yep, this is a strange one. Not many women are having regular sex according to recent scientific surveys in the USA. I’m not talking about one night stands here as that can have other health risks (STDs) but the kind of sex you have with a long term partner. Sex has long been known to boost immune function, energy levels and burn a heck of a lot of calories. It is also a fantastic way to bring more love into your relationship if you go about it with an altruistic attitude.
Can anyone think of any other STRANGE fitness ideas?
