What do you think about when you exercise?

Exercising can be lonely. It can be boring. It can be hard work. What do you think about when you exercise?

Sometimes when I have been on a long run I have thought that if someone else could hear my thoughts they would think I am the weirdest person in the world. I think about all sorts of things from what I am going to do later, to how the run is going, to what kind of bird is that over there… it is endless.

Last night I was playing a really tough indoor soccer match and I was in a position where I had to put my body on the line and run hard to get the ball. I was completely wrecked by that stage and really just wanted to let the guy run off with the ball and score a goal but I knew I had to sprint after him for the team. During times like that the thoughts that run through my head are very different.

In India I learned to be mindful of my thought so now when I am exercising I spend a lot of time just observing my mind and watching what is going on in there. This seems to quiet everything down.

So my question is, what do you think about when you are exercising? I read recently that the number one thought is about sex. Is that true?

jenny said:mmm.... don't know if that's what I think about but it has crossed my mind occasionally. usually i just think about pushing it harder on the treadmill

Elaine said:I'm usually really into my workout -- I think about how I feel, about the scenery I'm passing (when I run outside), about the song I'm listening to, about how much my muscles are burning and which ones are burning (when I strength train).

Unless I'm at the gym and bored or having a tough workout day. Then all I can think about is how much time I've got left!
joliex said:I usually thin about what I'll do later in the day. Also, I start imagining myself studying abroad in some other country.

Or I remember my favorite moments, like Christmas, or long talks with old friends. They keep me amused during my workout.

Strangely, I had never thought of sex during a workout.
