A few days ago I asked our readers whether they started their workouts with the same exercise each time. The response was mixed but many of you seem to start your workouts in the same way every time.
In this post I want to look at why this isn’t such a good idea.
When we go to the gym we tend to get into ruts. Once you get into a rut sooner or later you will find yourself at what is called a “plateau” which is a level you can’t seem to go beyond.
One of the fastest ways to get there is to do the same exercises in the same order.
Whether your goal is to gain some muscle or lose some fat, starting your workout with the same exercise every time not such a great idea. The body adapts to things very quickly and the gym is no exception. Each time you go your body gets pushed and when it recovers it trys to build itself up so that it will be able to handle the stress better next time. For this reason it is a good idea to change your workout order so your body doesn’t become too used to doing the same thing.
The second reason why you shouldn’t start with the same exercise has to do with energy. At the start of your workout you are full of energy and feeling good. As you go on, however, your muscles become tired and lifting weight becomes harder. This means that if you do the same weights exercise at the start of every workout the muscles that it works will be more developed than the ones you work during the latter parts of the workout.
As so many of you said you do the same exercise every time I thought to myself “perhaps it ain’t all bad!”. I know the readers of Real Women’s Fitness are some of the fittest women on the net so you must only be doing it if it is working.
And that is the positive.
If you are doing it and the routine is working for you then don’t stop. As long as you don’t find yourself stagnating and staying still then whatever you do is fine.
