Can Sodas and Soft Drinks Cause SERIOUS Health Problems?

Sodas and soft drinks are not good for our health. We all know it. But, do you know how bad they really are for you? If you drink soft drinks on a regular basis then you should read this post.

What are the major health concerns associated with soft drinks?

When you drink a soft drink you are really putting your body through a whole stream of different event. The ingredients and particularly the amount of ingredients found in soft drinks can cause many problems. Here are some of the main ones:

1. Weight gain
It has been scientifically proven that people who drink soft drinks on a regular basis will be fatter than those who don’t. This is mainly due to the huge amount of sugar that is found in soft drinks. Some soft drinks have up to 1000 KJ in them. That is a good hour on the treadmill!

2. Tooth decay
The sugar is also a concern for your dentist. This is particularly important for young children whose teeth are developing and growing - the sugar in a soft drink is too much for them to handle. It is the teeth that show the first signs of being damaged. Imagine what it is doing to your insides if it can erode the hard teeth.

3. Decreased bone density in women
This is the one I wanted most of you to pay attention to. Sodas and soft drinks have very high levels of phosphorus in them and it is now known that this substance interferes with the absorbtion of calcium. This is the main worry for women who are at risk of osteoporosis. Many scientists are now saying that it is the absorbtion of calcium and not the levels of calcium in the body that determines your risk of osteoporosis in old age.

The other reason many nutritionists warn against soft drinks when trying to develop healthy bones is because it causes us to drink less milk. It is very important that children do not replace their glasses of milk with sugary soft drinks. It may cause problems later in life.

As a side note, it is the Colas that are particularly high in phosphates. I know plenty of women who drink diet cola and think it is not harming them. It is.

4. Caffeine
Another point I want mothers to pay particular attention to is the levels of caffeine in their children. Would you give your four year old three cups of strong coffee? Can you imagine how sick it would make him/her feel? Well a cola is no different. In fact, when you give a child a cola the caffeine has the same effects on him that four cups of coffee would have on an adult man. That is not a good thing to do for your childs health.

5. Replacing healthy food
Soft drinks become serious when people (especially children) fill up on them instead of nutritional foods. A soft drink has hundreds of calories in it and these are empty calories meaning they do not help you meet your daily nutritional requirements in any way, shape or form.

Conclusion
The mixture of ingredients in soft drinks is potentially very harmful. Putting your body under this amount of stress is a sure-fire way to set yourself up for more serious illnesses. If you drink soft drinks everyday then you should consider cutting back - alot.
