This question has been debated by health professionals for many years and I can only write on what I have heard and read. It seems that the amount of calcium needed each day is about 1000mgs depending on how old you are.
In order to determine whether you need a calcium supplement or not you should look at how much dairy you eat per day as one serve of dairy usually contains about 300mgs of calcium. So, if you are not eating at least 1000mgs of calcium from your food then you should consider getting a supplement.
