Research: Women Don't Know the Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women - not breast cancer

New research has come out today in Australia showing that women are not wising up to the fact that heart disease is the leadings cause of death in women, not breast cancer.

I wrote about a similar study that was done sometime last year which showed similar results for women in Britan. The Heart Foundation here in Australia has now done the same thing and the results are almost identical.

Every day we turn on our television to see awareness campaign adverts about breast cancer but I cannot remember the last time I saw an advert advocating health hearts and warning women of the danger of heart disease.

Sophie Scott of the ABC News writes:

New research shows that few Australian women recognise that heart disease is the leading cause of death of Australian women.

The research found that more than half of those surveyed thought breast cancer was the main cause of death.

This to me is a bit of a worry because the article goes on to say that on average heart disease kills 220 women per week! That is a huge number of deaths from a disease where much can be done to prevent it.

Here at RWF we are always talking about keeping fit and healthy but how much attention do you pay to diseases such as this one? Did you know heart disease was the biggest killer of women?
