All About Weight Loss Pills

Do weight loss pills really help you lose weight?

If you’ve ever searched for weight loss information on the internet you would have encountered weight loss pills. They are advertised everywhere and market themselves as a miracle cure for overweight people.

In this post I’ll look at whether or not they really work and what all the hype is about.

What exactly is a weight loss pill?

The majority of weight loss pills on the market are pure appetite supressors. What this means is that everytime you take a pill it goes to work in your body and stops you from being hungry. So, ideally you will lose weight by the mere fact you are not eating as much.

Do they work?

Whether or not weight loss pills work is a big debate. Many people think they have little to no effect on weight loss while other people rave about them as the next big hit.

I have a few problems appetite suppressor type weight loss pills. Firstly, we should all know by now that eating less does not mean that you will lose weight. In fact, it can quite often mean the opposite.

You see your body has certain automatic responses that have been programmed into it for generations. If you start eating less your body will panic and think that food is running out and slow down your metabolism. This means you will keep fat on as an extra energy source. A much better way to lose weight is to eat more often. This means that your body is constantly digesting small amounts of food throughout the day. It knows there is lots of nutrition around and the constant stream keeps your metabolism revving.

My second problem with weight loss pills that suppress the appetite is that you do not eat as much food as you NEED to be eating. What I mean by this is that in today’s modern world we already struggle to get the right amount of vitamins and minerals. To quash your appetite so that you eat even less healthy food is not a good thing. Women especially need to monitor their nutritional intake as calcium and other vitamins can become very important in later life and during the developing years.

Are there other types of weight loss pills?

There are a few other types of weight loss pills on the market and more are being tested and developed at the moment. Some of them are involved in speeding up certain chemical processes whilst others try to block the absorbtion of certain fats and sugars. I will talk more about these at a later date.

My Doctor, in his fabulous wisdom, decided that I should give Reductil a go and so wrote me up a prescription. I lost 7kg over about 10 weeks but of course it came back on when I went off the pills.

My side effects included constipation and dry mouth which were both very annoying and were the reason I eventually went off the pills.
RT said:That's exactly what I'm talking about. Do you remember the type or brand of the pill you were on?
Nessajane said:Yep it was called Reductil.
RT said:Interesting. I will look more into it. It seems a lot of weight gain and weight loss pills work more with the water retention in your cells so that you look thinner but aren't really.
Angela said:The only weight loss pill I tried is Xenical. I took it a couple of months before my wedding. What it does is get rid of the oil and fat in your body which came from the food you ate. So, the more oily your food is, the more oil goes out.

Xenical is taken an hour before or during your meal. In three days, I noticed that my waste has an oily substance to it which means that Xenical is working. This could be a little messy since sometimes you "leak" oil (much like a stain) and you cannot control it.

I cannot really say if I lost weight due to Xenical or due to the stress of my upcoming wedding. But I guess Xenical did help but I haven't tried it taking it again.
cheryl said:im on ephedrine and they are the best thing to ever happen, i take 2 before breakfast, which speeds up your metabolism and 1 before lunch and jus drink water all day as well as eating properly, just breakfast lunch & dinner, no snacking and a good amount of exercise a day probably about an hour. your meant to take caffine and aspirin with them too 2 make them even more effective on your metabolism! :)
Barb said:Cheryl - could you tell me where are you buying your ephedrine? I was taking ephedra in 2002, lost 70 lbs in 8 months, and felt terrific; then they took it off the market. Subsequently I gained most of the weight back. I am on a healthy diet and exercise program now, but would like to have a metabolism boost. I know some stores sell ephedrine now, but where I live it is very difficult to find. Thanks.
