Does Chocolate Make You Fat?

Find out whether chocolate makes you fat

I bet there are going to be a few guilty women on diets out there this weekend! Easter is the chocolate holiday of the year so I thought I would take a look at whether or not chocolate really makes you fat.

What ingredients are in the typical chocolate?

If you want to determine whether or not something is going to make you fat then you should look at the ingredients as opposed to the nutritional information. Sure, the nutrition numbers on the back give you a lot of insight but it is also important to get a whole look at the food and you can only do that when you know exactly what is in there.

I got this list of ingredients from cadbury.com.au:

There are a few nasties in there but there is one I am really afraid of.

Sugar as the number one weight loss enemy

As we all know, sugar is not very good if you are trying to lose weight. And what we need to remember is that many foods that are high in refined sugar are low in nutritional content. For example, when we eat a chocolate bar we get a lot of our daily calorie intake but almost none of our daily vitamins or minerals. It is what is known as a nutrient deficient food. This is the type of food you want to avoid completely when trying to lose weight. And sadly, chocolate is one of those foods.

But isn’t chocolate healthy in some ways?

The news is always telling us that new studies have shown that a little bit of chocolate is good for you. This is true in some regards as it can have a trigger effect for some chemicals in your body that can be quite helpful. However, if your main concern is weight loss then the supposed health benefits of chocolate are probably not worth it.

So should I avoid chocolate for Easter?

Absolutely not! Easter is not about diets or weight loss it is about family. I do not have any particular religious feelings for Easter but I know many of my readers do. Try to get back to the day’s original meaning and enjoy the chocolate flavored celebrations that go along with it. One day a year isn’t going to hurt!

So does the sugar and other ingredient contents vary greatly. Some higher cocoa content chocolates do not contain any sugar.

I have also seen artifical sugar substitutes, honey, molasses, or other organic sweetness substitutes used.

So, to take your note a step further - read that label. Might help you make the perfect choice between decapitating that bunny, or sucking the chocolate egg clean! :D
