Home Weight Loss Workouts

Is your local gym too expensive? Rather do your weight loss workouts at home? Here are some ideas.

Weight Loss at Home

You really don’t need a fancy gym membership to achieve amazing results. Gym machines are designed to make exercises more efficient but in doing so they sometimes just make them easier. So, if you can’t go to the gym, don’t feel like you can’t make any progress. Here are my favourite home weight loss workouts.

Boring Cardio

Obviously it isn’t that hard to go for a job out in the street or in the local park. We all do it and we don’t need to be told it is a great new idea! Rather, the task is to make working out at home a little more exciting so that the initial motivation doesn’t pass after a few weeks. And, running on the road can be boring. So, here are some more exciting (challenging!)ways to lose weight.

Running Hills

This is an amazingly difficult way to do weight loss cardio. You will give your whole legs and butt an incredible workout too. I challenge professional sportpeople to do this, I really don’t think all of them could. The idea is to find the steepest, meanest hill in your area and sprint up it as fast as you can. Walk back down and repeat. Each time try to break your record. My Kung Fu buddies and I used to do this all the time and we would name our hill so that when we ran up it we could shout slurs and swear words at him to urge us on! Works a treat!

The great thing about hill sprints is the that fat just burns off. Your heart rate stays up for much longer than regular weight loss workouts like jogging and so you are burning fat long after you finish the exercise.

Circuits

I often talk about the weight loss and fitness benefits of circuits but it is a really great idea to set up a ‘cardio only’ circuit with many different exercises. It is more challenging and keeps it interesting.

For example, run a certain distance around your block and then head home and do five minutes of skipping. Then head over to the heavy bag and do some boxing for five minutes before jumping on the bike and tackling the local hill. There is nothing wrong with switching between exercises as long as you don’t rest too much inbetween. Some people think it must all be one perfect workout with one weight loss exercise. Not so.

Partner Weight Loss Training

I am a big fan of training with a friend or a group of people. There is always a slight competitive vibe that leads to getting more work done.

Always train with a partner who is better than you at fitness, sport, weight loss, etc. If you train at a higher level you will learn much faster and make much more noticeable progress. This is especially true if you play a sport like tennis or netball. Many of the world’s great sportplayers played sport with older brothers and sisters or their parents from an early age.

A great idea is to meet a group of people at the park twice or three times a week and each time it is someone elses turn to think of a weight loss exercise. For example, you could play a game of netball or park soccer, do a certain marathon run, etc. Or, spend the time focussing on a muscle group like the legs by doing lots of squats, jumping squats, lunges, hill sprints, etc.

Step Ups

Step ups are one of those excellent weight loss exercises that spur you on by trying to beat your previous record.

Step ups are done by simply stepping up on to a higher surface like a table or ledge while holding a medium heavy weight. They can be done watching television or outside in the sun. Each time you do this exercise try to beat your last record by doing more in a certain amount of time or working out for a longer period of time. Try to keep them intense. Doing them one leg at a time is a good way to keep them hard.

Conclusion
Try to keep your workouts interesting and keep changing them. There is nothing wrong with doing a new exercise if you are bored with the old one. The main point is just to do something!

Does anyone have any other home weight loss exercises?
