While having a baby is one of the most wonderful things a woman can ever experience, after gaining weight consistently for months it’s natural for a new mother to want to regain a little bit of normalcy and return to the weight they had before the baby. The first thing to do is to forget about the celebrity moms who lose weight instantly after conceiving – it doesn’t happen. If you’ve already had a child before you most recent one, you know the new adventures a baby can bring. And, if this is your first baby, you should know the challenges and struggles you’ll face to stick to a weight loss regime. Its okay if it takes several months to get into your new fitness regime, don’t get frustrated.
It takes up to 6 months after conceptions for your body to return to normal.
This is part of the reason why you should not be in too much of a hurry to get rid of calories. In addition to the trauma from giving birth, coupled with the entire pregnancy it should leave you feeling exhausted. Also, caring for a new baby can be very stressful and will take up most of your time. Your top priority within the months shortly after giving birth is to eat healthy food with enough calories and nutrients to give you the energy your body needs to get back on track.
Once you’ve begun to regain the strength you once had before the pregnancy, you can then start undergoing a healthy weight loss diet and beginning vigorous exercise. While you may have gained more than a couple dozen pounds during the pregnancy, you’re not going to be able to lose it all overnight. Talk to your doctor about an exercise regimen that would be good for you. You should aim to lose no more than one pound a week and continue eating healthy food full of nutrients.
During the pregnancy, you should’ve gained approximately 25-35 pounds. While delivering the baby, females typically lose about a dozen pounds or so, leaving anywhere from a dozen to two-dozen pounds of weight to be lost afterwards. If you consider a three-month recovery period after giving birth before beginning your exercise program, the excess body weight should be lost in 6-8 months. If you gained more than 35 pounds during your pregnancy, you should allow roughly an extra month for each additional six-pounds that you gained.

| Amanda said: | I had a baby girl almost 5 months ago. I gained 45 pounds during the pregnancy. I have lost all but 10 pounds. I have been eating healthy and exercising for the last month and haven't lost a pound or inch. I am discouraged but still trying. I can't go to the gym so I do exercise tapes when she is asleep and run when I can. My baby is worth every pound and stretch mark but I admit I hate my body right now. |
