Regardless how you want to lose weight, that’s not the hardest part of the whole ordeal – the hard part comes when you try to keep it off.
Some the defend fad diets claim that their diet is good for the long-term and they argue that their diet will work for the long term. However, any diet that limits food groups or calories simply isn’t practical to stay on for the rest of your life. Not only are you probably being denied certain vitamin and nutrients that your body needs, but you’re also making your diet that much harder to stick to. Simply put, restrictive diets don’t work.
There are lots of ways to lose weight. The question is, how do you lose weight and keep it off? Atkins advocates argue that their diet works -- as do many other diets that strictly limit food groups or calories. But is losing weight worthwhile if you go right back to your old eating habits and regain the weight? Most folks who use restrictive diets regain the lost weight and then some. That's why "diets don't work."
So what exactly does work, you might ask. Well, the basics of losing weight as you may know is to eat fewer calories than you burn. It doesn’t matter if these calories come from fat, protein, or carbohydrates – as long as you are in the negative for calorie-intake at the end of the day, you will lose weight. However, sticking to a long-term weight loss program depends on your individual schedule and capabilities, so you have to try to find the right one for you.
Regardless of the weight loss program, there are a few essential foundations for your program. If you choose to build your weight loss program on the following fundamentals, you will have a very good chance of sticking on your diet for months and years to come.
Don’t make drastic changes. No matter how dedicated you are to losing weight, theys imply won’t work. Make small changes like instead of drinking whole milk, drink 2%. Likewise, if you drink 2% milk already, drink 1%. Then once you become accustomed, keep dropping down until you’re drinking skim milk. You can try this with a lot of your different kinds of foods, such as salad dressings, cheeses, and mayonnaise.
Concentrate on eating. If you’re always just gulping down a liter of soda and a cheeseburger and fries as your dinner, you’ll always eat like that and not think about it. This is mindless eating that you will never break that habit of if you keep doing it. What you should do is concentrate on eating, enjoy it, and take more time into making healthy meals.
No buffets and second helpings. Ever. You’re not limiting the kind of food you eat, you’re simply cutting off your food supply.
Find physical activities that are not chores, but are instead enjoyable to participate in. If the fad diet you just joined tells you to run 2 miles everyday, that may be all well in good – but if you think running is as fun as going to the dentist, you won’t stick to it for the rest of your life. Do something that is both active and something you like, like playing basketball, walking the dogs, jumping on a trampoline, etc. If you're stuck with how to get started, check out these workouts.
Consider vitamin and mineral supplements. If your doctor allows you, consider taking supplements composed of vitamin and minerals. Whether you have a healthy diet or not, your body may be lacking the required nutrients that it needs to function 100% efficiently. It is possible that this could be causing you to gain weight, or keep the weight that you are trying to lose.
And lastly, try to eat healthy. Note, this doesn’t say restrict chips, nor does it say never eat a piece of chocolate cake. Just try to eat healthy. Enjoy your evenings out with friends, just abide by the rules listed above and try to not overindulge. If you’ve had pizza already twice in one week, you probably shouldn’t go out and haven’t again. However, if you’ve had an entire week of balanced meals – by all means, go out with your friends Friday night to that pizza gallery.
