I have to confess I am a bit of a fan of a nice brew of coffee. However, I dark worry has entered my mind - does coffee make you fat?
The first thing you need to remember when looking at the health benefits/problems associated with coffee is that it is a drug. That is how it is classified and it is done so because it is addictive. If you drink a lot of coffee your body will become chemically adapted and quite dependant on it - this is fact.
However, the problem arises when people try to put a set amount on what is bad and what is good when it comes to coffee. In my experience and research, however, I have found that the best amount of coffee is zero. Here’s why.
One of the things people don’t often look at is what goes ALONG with a cup of coffee. Furthermore, they don’t look at the practices that go along with a coffee addiction.
Generally when a scientist is researching whether coffee is good or bad he/she will analyse the chemical components that make up a coffee and then look at how that affects the body. That’s fine. We need to know this type of thing. However, coffee’s real problem as far as I am concerned is the bad habits it forms when you become addicted.
For example, when you have a cup of coffee you usually have a snack as well. This snack has to be fast to obtain as a coffee doesn’t take long to make or buy and you probably have to get back to work. So, it usually ends up being unhealthy.
Next, when you are addicted to coffee you think about it a lot and you probably try to tell yourself you’ve had enough for one day and replace that drink with some other vice. Regardless of how subtle this craving is I bet if you look carefully you will find it.
Lastly, when you realize you have a drug habit your resolve and will power weakens. You will subtly say to yourself: “Oh well, I’m addicted, nothing I can do about it now.” This attitude will lead to other slip ups and bad habits in your life. It will carry over to your diet, exercise, lifestyle and eventually you will get fat.
Conclusion
This post is not proven or tested by science, it is my own thoughts and ramblings. I want you to think about it though as it often is the substance that 100% of the problem but the things that go with it.

If you drink coffee (I myself drink it because I have low blood pressure and not even years of swimming and running and a healthy diet have changed it, it's been like this since I was 8) to stay awake, you will have to drink more and more coffee with time because the receptors in your brain for caffeine are "stuffed". If you regularly stop drinking coffee for one week, those receptors are freed completely again, and you can begin with one cup of coffee again. Also it is a fact that caffeine does help burning fat - also, there's a reason as to why especially in Southern Europe an espresso is served in restaurants or at home after a meal or dinner. This is not to disagree with your own experience, I just wanted to clear some of the mistakes concerning the myth of coffee being healthy. In fact, if you don't suffer from ulcer or heart diseases, you can easily drink up to 4 cups of coffee a day without it having any negative effect. Again, if you're a healthy person (not talking about people with high blood pressure etc, they shouldn't drink it. period) Sorry for my odd English at times, I'm not a native speaker. PS: I think your site is very helpful as it lists a whole variety of healthy tips on how to lose weight (I personally use it for the excercising parts, I want to gain weight, but haven't found any good article here on that. Also with all the sports, all I lost was my breast size, a whole two cups - the rest of my body hasn't changed in shape . I would love to see tips on how to gain weight back in certain areas where excercising has reduced them. Thanks) |

In fact, a cup of coffe increases the performance endurance in long duration activities. Also, have I read that coffee is good for the prevention of risk for type 2 diabetes. Yet, one needs to be moderate while drinking coffee, too much of it will be very harmful. |
| uniqn said: | as the title goes: does coffee make you fat? In my own opinion, it makes you thin instead as it contains caffeine. Caffeine is known to boost one's metabolism. That's why after drinking coffee, one may typically feel his/her heart racing. However, coffee makes you thin only when you do not add tons and tons of sugar to it. Otherwise, it's fat-burning property will be completely over-rided by the high sugar dose. However, for women, it's best that we do not consume coffee as caffeine leads to loss of calcium, which is essential for us women. Moreover, women also tend to have higher calcium loss compared to men due to our menstruation. That's just my 2 cents' worth =) |

If you like to have an occasional cup of coffee with dessert or maybe while reading the paper in the morning... there's no harm... if you NEED to have a cup of coffee to open your eyes in the morning then there might be a problem. Also, coffee has many proven positive qualities (antioxidants, etc...), however if you doctor it up too much by adding tons of cream and sugar and whipped cream and sprinkles, it can easily make you fat... the same way a banana is good for you, but if you dip it in chocolate and top it with a scoop of ice cream it's not that good anymore. Just use common sense and remember that any actual addiction is never good! |
