The Best Chillout Music Around

It’s a running joke at the CD store I work at that people ask for “…that CD called chillout…”. If you are one of those people, go get yourself a Ministry of Sound Chillout Sessions (there are like 8 of them), a Hotel Costes, Cafe Del Mar or the like. When I’m ‘chilling out’(for want of a better term), I prefer something with more soul than these cafe-esk soundtracks. So next time you are stretching, sun-baking, having a bath or simply putting your feet up and listening to your ipod, try these on for size.

The Best Chillout Music Around

Here are my favorite chillout albums. Some are young, some are old.

India ArieIndia Arie | Acoustic Soul
With inspired lyrics, soul/R&B beats and arguably the smoothest vocal tone in the busi-ness, this album is a must for everyone. As a woman I identify 100% with her lyrics that are both truthful and uplifting - a rare combination.
Favourite Songs: Video, Back to the Middle, Always in My Head & Beautiful.
If you like this also try: India Arie’s 2nd album Voyage to India, Erykah Badu & Jill Scott.

Herbie HancockHerbie Hancock | Possibilities
I had to include this collaboration album because it has my absolute favourite ‘chill out’ song Christina Aguilera’s cover of ‘Song for You’, I have been known to put it on repeat and just listen to it over and over while relaxing in the bath with a glass of wine.
Favourite songs: Song for You, Stitched Up (feat. John Mayer) & When Love Came to Town (feat. Jonny Lang & Joss Stone).
If you like this also try: Al Jarreau & George Benson Givin it Up, Joss Stone & John Mayer.

AlanisAlanis Morrisette | Jagged Little Pill Acoustic
My first ever CD was the original cut of this album. Alanis re-recorded all the tracks acous-tically in 2005, and I think I possibly like it more. The acoustic flavour takes some of the bite out of the angsty lyric. I can’t pick favourite songs from this, I love them all, just don’t forget the hidden track at the end.

EllaElla Fitzgerald | Gold
I could’ve put any Ella album on this list, but this is my favourite collection. It has all my fa-vorites. Ella was the best vocalist of the jazz era, and possibly ever. She has perfect pitch, excellent musicianship, beautiful tone and best of all, a sense of humor.
Favourite songs: (Oh it’s so hard to pick they are all good… well if I have to…) Nearness of you, Lady is a Tramp, Mack the Knife (hilarious!!), Georgia on My Mind…. (I could go on and on).
If you like this also try: Other jazz divas like Nancy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Barbara Morri-son, Etta James, Nina Simone, etc…

Joss StoneJoss Stone | The Soul Sessions
Beautiful Songs, heavenly voice. A must have in every soul lovers collection. This collec-tion is great because it’s like Joss is channeling Aretha Franklin, but all the songs are chilled out and delicately performed (I find that all my Aretha albums make me wanna dance - not chill out!).
Favourite Songs: Chokin Kind, Dirty Man & I Had a Dream.
If you like this also try: Introducing Joss Stone, Back to Black or Frank by Amy Winehouse.

So now you’ve heard my favourite ‘chillout’ albums, tell us about yours.
